As per the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children′s Hospital Association, weekly COVID-19 cases among children surged past 100,000 for the first time since early February.
There has been a 29% surge in reported cases over the previous week, taking the tally for August 6-12 to more than 121,000. The figures made it the worst week for new infections in children since January 29 to February 4, stated the AAP and CHA in the weekly COVD-19 report. The rise in COVID-19 cases in children has also led to a record surge in hospitalizations and shortage of pediatric ICU beds in certain areas.
The total of 121,000 new infections translate to a surge of almost 1,400% since June 18-24, when the weekly tally was 8,447, the lowest in more than a year. The total number of COVID-19 cases in children since the onset of the pandemic stood close to 4.4 million, which constitutes 14.4% of all cases in the United States, noted the AAP and CHA… (Medscape)
